What makes people a mass? How do individuals melt into a crowd? For this video I took around 100,000 pictures of crowds in public places (Berlin central station, Munich Oktoberfest, IFA consumer electronics show). The camera shutter quantizes time, the blur of one-second exposures reveals faces for an instant, dissolving back into the collective movement.
I derived the melodic phrases of the music by mapping the first 200 decimal digits of the mathematical constant Pi to a pentatonic scale (don't wonder why - that's another project). "Alex", the synthetic voice of the OS-X operating system, recites twitter messages beginning with "I want" - presumably reflecting the inner voices of the humans flowing with the crowd.
